Gisborne, with its stunning coastline and world-class waves, is a true surfer's paradise. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to brush up on your skills, Gisborne has several beaches perfect for learning to surf. The surf is generally pretty consistent compared to other parts of Aotearoa and there are plenty of options at different beaches for beginners to give surfing a crack.

However, picking the right spot with suitable conditions is key to ensuring your safety and enjoyment. Here’s a local’s guide to the best beginner-friendly beaches in Gisborne and some tips to get you started.  If in doubt call in to see the friendly team at Gisborne's Best Surf Shop, Blitz Surf Shop for daily surf conditions and recommended beaches to surf at.

If you want a good surf forecasting website check out New Zealand owned and operated Good Surf Now.  Couple this with reliable wind forecasting on windy.com and check out the free live surf camera provided by Blitz Surf Shop located towards the southern end of Wainui Beach.  It is good to brush up on the orientation of Gisborne beaches to make the most of these sites.

1. Waikanae Beach

Waikanae Beach is the closest beach for beginner surfers to the centre of Gisborne. Located near the heart of the city, at the end of Grey Street (past the local I-Site, Gisborne skatepark and pump track) it offers regular small waves that generally just feather and push softly towards the beach that are ideal for first-timers. The sandy, gradual decline bottom provides a safe environment, making it a go-to spot for surf schools and families. It’s also conveniently close to facilities like parking, Waikanae Surf Lifesaving Club that also has a free webcam looking at Waikanae Beach, cold showers and Captain Morgans dairy and cafe.

There are no rocks here, but there can be logs and other hazards after stormy periods.

When the swell is small, Waikanae becomes a playground for those just starting their surfing journey. However, always check the conditions before heading out—even Waikanae Beach can get large waves or strong rips. For daily updates on surf conditions, pop into Blitz Surf Shop; our team is always happy to share local insights.

Swell from the southerly quarter gets in here (SE, S and SW) and has offshore winds from NW to NE

2. Roberts Road

Just up from Waikanae Beach as you head in the direction of Midway Beach is Roberts Road. Continuous with Waikanae Beach It offers mellow waves in the right conditions and is generally less crowded with swimmers than Waikanae and often has slightly better waves. This makes it an excellent spot for practicing your pop-ups and getting comfortable on your board without the pressure of navigating busy lineups.  There is a decent amount of parking down this cul de sac and a cold, fresh shower to rinse off afterwards.

Like all surf spots, Roberts Road is best for beginner surfers when the waves are small and the wind isn’t too strong. If you’re unsure about the conditions, drop by Blitz Surf Shop for tips on whether Roberts Road is the right call for the day.

3. Gizzy Pipe

Gizzy Pipe, located near Midway Beach, is another great option for learners when the conditions are right. Generally we would encourage beginners to start at Waikanae/Roberts Road but if it is too small down that end of the beach Midway/Pipe is often a little bigger.

This spot features relatively forgiving waves on smaller days, and it’s a popular location for beginner and intermediate surfers alike. The sandbanks here can create some fun, rideable waves when the conditions align, giving beginners a chance to improve their balance and timing.

If the swell is manageable and you’re feeling confident, Gizzy Pipe is worth checking out. Just remember to stick to the smaller surf days until you’re more comfortable in the water.

Gizzy Pipe can pump and also get really rippy.  So be aware of the conditions, if in doubt don't go out.  Asks locals at the beach what they think of the curent conditions for beginner surfers.

Midway Surflifesaving Club is really close to Pipe, also the Kiosk for some food or the relatively new Tahu restaurant for restaurant quality food, great cocktails and the best restaurant view in Gisborne.

4. Northern Makorori

Makorori Beach is a must-visit for surfers, offering a range of breaks suitable for all levels. For beginners, the northern end of Makorori is the most welcoming. It features gentle waves that roll in consistently, providing plenty of opportunities to practice catching and riding waves.  A bit more exposed to swell than the town beaches, this is your first port of call as a beginner if the surf is too small in town.  Great spot for the whole family to hang out at in the summer.  There is plenty of parking in the main carpark or head down the road towards the housing and there are plenty of parks on the grass right by the beach.

Swell from most directions from SW to east and offshore winds from NW to NE.  Like all spots in Gisborne it can get big and/or dangerous.  Even on small days low tide can see the waves dump pretty hard.  Any tide off low tide tends to be the best with generally the softest waves happening at full high tide.

As you progress, you can explore other parts of Makorori, such as the main point and centers like Centres and Red Bus, which cater to intermediate and advanced surfers. These spots have faster waves and steeper take-offs, making them great for surfers looking to level up their skills.  Rock and sand combos make Makorori Beach probably the most consistent surf beach in Gisborne

A Note on Wainui Beach

While Wainui Beach is one of Gisborne’s most iconic surf spots, it’s typically not the best choice for beginners. The waves here are often more powerful, and the beach’s rips and currents can pose a challenge for those new to surfing. That said, Wainui is fantastic for experienced surfers and should be on your radar as you gain confidence and skill.

Surfing Safely

No matter where you choose to surf, always prioritize safety. Check the conditions before heading out, and avoid surfing if the waves are too big, the currents are strong, or the wind is unfavorable. It’s also important to watch out for other surfers and always respect local surf etiquette.  Check out our handy Gisborne surf guide which has information on surfing etiquette.
