 WRECK!  REPAIR!  REUSE!
Wetsuits are built to handle the elements, but even the best gear can take a beating out in the waves. Whether it’s from rugged reef encounters, sharp fins, or just everyday wear, small rips and worn seams happen.  Or if your child is running around in the rockpools they can do damage to their kids wetsuit
Your wetsuit is one of the most important items in your surfing equipment and one of the more costly, especially with cold water surfing in New Zealand. Luckily, with the right know-how and our solid ocean and earth wetsuit repair kit from Blitz Surf Shop, you can keep your wetsuit going strong without shelling out for a new one.

So Hi! Here's your kiwi guide to fixing wetsuit damage and giving your suit a few more seasons in New Zealand’s beautiful waters.

Why Repair Your Wetsuit?
We LOVE our wetsuit! They're like our second skin that keeps us warm, comfortable, and out on the waves longer. They look after us and here at blitz we believe that you should look after them too. Even minor damage can compromise its ability to insulate, letting cold water seep in and chill you fast. Learning to patch up small tears or seam splits yourself can save you lots of money and extend your suit’s life so you can keep riding waves and seeking kai moana in comfort without hurting your wallet.

Step-By-Step Guide to Repairing Your Wetsuit
Step 1: Spot the Damage
Small tears, holes, or fraying seams are common issues. Before jumping in with glue, assess the damage carefully. For tiny punctures, a little glue can do wonders. For larger rips, a patch might be necessary.

Step 2: Clean and Dry
Cleanliness is key! Rinse the damaged area with fresh water to get rid of any salt, sand, or oils, then let it dry completely. This helps the glue adhere better. Remember to avoid direct sunlight, as UV rays can weaken neoprene.

Step 3: Apply Neoprene Glue
Neoprene glue, found in our repair kit, is made for wetsuits, creating a strong, waterproof bond. Apply a thin layer to the edges of a tear, press them together, and allow it to dry. For added strength, apply a second layer once the first one has set.

Step 4: Use a Patch (for Larger Tears)
If the tear is a bit too big for glue alone, cut a patch from the neoprene material in the kit to cover the area. Glue the patch onto the wetsuit, pressing firmly to ensure it sticks well, and let it dry according to the kit instructions.

Step 5: Reinforce Seams as Needed
For frayed or split seams, a thin line of neoprene glue can work wonders. Carefully apply glue along the seam line, pressing the edges together, and let it set before stretching or pulling on the seam.

Quick Tips: Wetsuit Repair Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s
  • Do Use Quality Repair Products: Not all adhesives are suited for wetsuits. Our neoprene-specific glue ensures your repair won’t break down in the water.
  • Do Regular Checks: Inspect your wetsuit regularly, especially if you’ve been encountering hard or sharp surfaces.
  • Do Store It Properly: Always rinse with fresh water after surfing, and hang it to dry in a shaded area to protect it from the sun.
Don’ts
  • Don’t Use Household Glue: General-purpose adhesives won’t last on neoprene. Always use neoprene-specific glue for a long-lasting repair.
  • Don’t Ignore Small Tears: Small damage can grow quickly, so fix it early!
  • Don’t Rush the Drying Process: Give your repair time to fully dry before using your wetsuit again. This will ensure the bond is solid and waterproof.
